Our Journey: From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Community

The Buruburu FGCK started in 1972 as the first Nairobi branch of the church, with just 12 members meeting in a library room at Tom Mboya Social Hall in Makadara Estate. The church's establishment and growth are largely credited to three young preachers: Johnson Gatitu, James Mwangi, and Peter Ndung'u. These preachers conducted open-air and door-to-door evangelism in Makadara, sharing the gospel with the community. Johnson and James were brothers who had moved from their rural home in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua, to Nairobi in search of better life prospects. Peter, a member of the FGCK in Nakuru, was actively evangelizing in the Westlands area of Nairobi.
As the church grew, Johnson and Peter took on the responsibility of nurturing the Nairobi congregation. James, who had been involved in the church's early days, later moved on to serve as a pastor in the Pentecostal Assemblies of God church. The two preachers, Johnson and Peter, organized joint meetings in areas like Kangemi, Kawangware, Waithaka, and Eastleigh, culminating in the growth of the church. This led to the move of Sunday services from Makadara to Mbotela Hall in Ofafa Jericho Estate in early 1973. The congregation continued to expand, necessitating another relocation to Dr. Aggrey Primary School in Pumwani.
As the church grew, there was an increasing need for a permanent church building. In response, the leaders of the Nairobi church sought support from the leadership of the Nakuru FGCK, where Peter had come from. The Nakuru leadership, including Pastors Joseph Mwangi, Simon Thuku, and Samuel Wachira, as well as Missionary Oke Suderlund, deliberated on the matter and decided that Peter and Johnson would jointly oversee the Nairobi church in an acting capacity, with Peter taking the role of acting pastor. The leadership of the Nakuru church committed to supporting the Nairobi branch in its growth.
In 1974, two Finnish missionaries, Anna-Lisa Anturi and Eva-Lisa Nikkila, joined the Nairobi church. Eva-Lisa worked as a missionary nurse at Koru Bible School, while Anna-Lisa served in Kericho. Their contributions greatly impacted the growth of the church.
With the support of the Kenyan government, the church leaders secured a plot of land in Buruburu, which allowed them to set up a church structure. A tent borrowed from the Kericho FGCK was pitched on the Buruburu site, and Sunday services were moved there. However, the tent was eventually replaced with a partitioned wooden structure after it was destroyed in a rainstorm. This wooden structure served as the venue for Sunday services for many years, until the construction of the current church building began.
The construction of the Buruburu church was made possible through significant support from the Finnish brethren, who helped purchase four plots in Eastleigh. These plots were consolidated into one and later sold to fund the construction of the Buruburu church. Under the leadership of Peter Ndung'u as senior pastor, alongside missionaries Matti Vilikka and his wife Kaarina, the church building was completed and consecrated in 1976. The church was officially opened on September 10, 1979, by Missionary Kai Antturi.
The Buruburu church has played a crucial role in the establishment of many other churches both within Nairobi and beyond. Churches planted through outreach meetings include those in Konza, Masii, and Loitoktok, which have, in turn, planted other churches across Ukambani, Kajiado, and Narok.
The leadership of the Buruburu church has seen several transitions over the years. Pastor Peter Ndung'u served as the pioneer pastor, assisted by individuals like Samuel Wachira, John Kariuki, Azariah Onsongo, and missionary Matti Vilikka. Later, Reverend Stephen Kiguru succeeded Pastor Peter Ndung'u and was assisted by Pastor David Gitaari. After Pastor Gitaari's departure, Pastor Simon Mureithi and Pastor John Ondit joined the leadership team. Reverend Kiguru later became the Nairobi Regional Chairman and, subsequently, the General Overseer of the FGCK. Upon his retirement from these roles, Reverend Daniel Gachuki took over as senior pastor in 2007 and served until 2016.
In 2016, Bishop Isaac Kariuki, Senior Pastor of Kasarani LCA and District Overseer of Nairobi Central, took over as Senior Pastor of the Buruburu church. Under his leadership, several governance reforms and development initiatives were introduced, resulting in significant church growth and other milestones. These achievements have been supported by the Nairobi regional office, led by the late Bishop Dr. Geoffrey Mutheca, and the national office leadership under General Overseer, Bishop Dr. David Macharia.
Today, the Buruburu branch serves as the headquarters of the Nairobi Local Church Assembly (LCA). It is one of the 11 branches that make up the Nairobi LCA, alongside others such as Kimathi, Jogoo Road, Gikomba, Kwa Maji, City Carton, Mizpah, Mowlem, Shauri Moyo, Kamukunji, and Capital-City. The Buruburu church continues to grow and influence many lives through its outreach and spiritual programs.
